Learn more about Truth or Consequences

Renamed after a 1950s game show in a quirky bid for fame, this desert town delivers on its promise of oddity. Soak away worries in mineral-rich hot springs at Blackstone or Riverbend, where the water bubbles up naturally hot and healing. The Geronimo Springs Museum reveals local history with surprising depth for such a small place. Elephant Butte Lake State Park offers New Mexico's largest reservoir for boating and beach days that feel improbably tropical in the desert landscape. Spaceport America provides tours where space tourism is becoming reality, not science fiction. The downtown area maintains its mid-century charm with cafes where locals still debate whether the name change was brilliant marketing or collective madness.

"The outside of the hotel was dirty. It is an older hotel so I will give that some consideration. The room however was very clean. My stay was excellent and I would return. My only criticism is the pillows are in desperate need of replacement; too small and too soft."

Dam Site Lodge

Dam Site Lodge

8/10 Good
"It's an older but well-maintained property, with ambiance a bit like an older hunting lodge - though the torrential rains did cause some building issues for them. There's communication issues between them and Expedia; check-in is expected by 4 pm, otherwise have to call directly - and the listed "minifridge" and "microwave" amenities are actually in a common kitchen area. A bit awkward, but the staff is quite accommodating. If you admire cactus and native flowering plants, the grounds are wonderful viewing. And of course, the prime location near the dam, boat ramps, etc."
