"It’s a renovated hotel, the staff are courteous, and the river proximity is lovely. Overall our stay was okay. We are a family of four and ordered the family room which turned out to be on the lower ground floor. The room was dark, north facing, and has a damp smell. There is access to a patio but it is shared with another room and during our stay those people were out and their kids were playing ball. We had no privacy and were forced to close the curtains. The room is not well lit—there’s one ceiling light but it is cold white and unpleasant. The breakfast is very basic—too basic for the price: no kids yogurts, simple bread, and gas and baked beans and some meats. A few cheeses. Only French press coffee, no non dairy options. It’s a reasonably clean hotel, but the windows and the window frames were very dirty. Overall, not overwhelming but also not a disaster. "

"Booked and paid last year for room with king bed. Didnt get that. No explanation why from staff. Room was in old part with no ventilation and double bed that needed to be replaced years ago. Pillows were terrible. Floors created and shower water got stuck on scalding and needed to be fixed. All over very disappointing stay. "

"Great location and very friendly and helpful staff. Parking was a bit of an issue as we arrived later in the afternoon. Hotel was pleasant for a one night stay but small room and a large stain on the carpet greeted us as we opened the door to enter. Had all the amenities necessary."

"Nice clean and quiet room. Pleasant staff. Nothing spectacular either good or bad. Which was perfect. It was just what I needed. "

"Staff here are wonderful, it’s incredibly clean and beautifully decorated. Unfortunately the bed was so uncomfortable I didn’t sleep other than this everything was great. Food well presented and tasted soo good. "

"The property is in the middle of town so very convenient for a look around the following day. There was plenty of room for the 3 of us in the room (69 year olds). The beds were comfy and clean as was the bathroom. The decor was a little sad in the rooms but the comfort and price more than met expectations. My biggest concern was that we were put in the 2nd floor, with no lift and I have big mobility problems and struggled to get up and down the stairs. When asked if there was a similar room on the bottom floor I was told it was for two adults and a child only. I feel this is discriminating against disabled people (pensioners) who may not want a single room. And the risks of vacating the hotel in case of a fire would be a huge problem. To finish on a high note, the breakfast was very good, and we went back for a drink at lunch time and the food looked amazing but we were too full to eat after the size of the breakfast. "

"First time staying in The Merchant and although the single bed room was a bit of a hike from reception it was clean and comfortable Staff were very welcoming especially at breakfast which was an excellent buffet"
