Hotel staff were very friendly and most spoke English very well. The location is perfect for taking in all the shopping, restaurants, and sight seeing.
This hotel is a small, family run hotel that is very lovely and restored so beautifully. The hotel is roomy, quiet, and a wonderful stay. Don't expect a lot of service extras, as reception has only a few hours a day, but they are available in case of emergencies. If you are looking for a quiet, tranquil get away, this is a perfect place. The breakfast buffet was delicious and had variety from day to day as well. Highly recommend.

This is my 16th trip to Germany. The Torfhaus Resort rates as one of the best experiences that I have ever had. The location is perfect for hiking, biking, sightseeing or just relaxing. It is in the forest, but close to Altenau, Braunlage and other larger communities. The cottages are in excellent shape with the most modern appliances. Staff is very professional and always on duty. Really great spa and pool, room, and food. Some important details: no spa admission after 8 pm, it reopens at 10 in the morning. Restaurant kitchen closes after 8 pm too, but they still serve drinks and charcuterie. Some staff spoke English and it was helpful because the receptionist did not. Also the credit card machine at the reception wouldn't process Hotels.com charges in dollars (but the restaurant's card reader can do it)
The town of Stolberg is an amazing old town with beautifully maintained Fachwerk buildings. The Gasthaus Kupfer is one of them. The rooms are large, clean and comfortable with remodeled bathrooms. The staff was kind and helpful. I was in the area on business and just happened to find the Gasthaus because of proximity to my meeting. Would like to return for a tour of the area.
