Nagasaki has a fascinating history of links with the west from early Portuguese and Dutch traders to its Industrial Revolution and of course more recently the tragic events of World War Two. Several excellent museums around the city illustrate this.

The atomic bomb museum and related features nearby are definitely worth seeing and pondering. We must learn from history, but the sad fact is: do we?

Nagasaki is great. The Atomic Bomb museum is very confronting and impressive. It was a real eye-opener. This you must see when in Nagasaki.

Urakami cathedral--full access is limited to service timetable. Oura cathedral/church charges 1000yen pp entrance--not mentioned on tourist info. Both require long steep climb to access.

My primary reason would be to visit the Atomic Bombing historical sites as well as the Dejima (old abandoned coal mining island). Unless you're in Kyushu area, don't think would be a viable location to visit alone.

Public transport within the city is great. It will be perfect if Shinkansen is direct from Hakata without train change.

This is my 3rd time to Nagasaki. We enjoyed our time there. Lovely city.
"Very nice hotel, great location for tourists.
Clean rooms, awesome staff, and excellent breakfast buffet option.
Easy access to train cars, good food, and shopping. "
"Staff are very friendly and helpful. The size of the room is reasonable, and location is unbeatable. Bathroom is clean but has a slight misty smell. However, this would not stop us from going back. "
"Excellent hotel near to the tram lines and centrally situated. Do opt for the buffet breakfast as you won’t need lunch. Great onsen on top floor. Lots of extra thrown in too. Excellent stay."
"This hotel was about a seven minute walk from the station and not too far from the electric street car. It had great facilities and the breakfast was delicious. "
