The botanical gardens are near the University area. I took a tram to near the gardens then walked through to the uni area - was leafy and nice walk. There is a huge park between Uni area and old city - worth a wander through. Very peaceful.

Excellent
Graz is a charming smaller city by the river filled with winding cobblestone streets. Its Styrian cuisine is very good and easily available at reasonable prices. I highly recommend a stay of 2-3 nights.
