Underground tunnels for onsen, many onsen up and down the street. Picturesque little mountain town. Cute, great for a couple retreat. Also epic skiing nearby at Shiga Kogen

Bus to Nagano station seemed easy although we had a hire car. Snow monkey station definitely worth a visit - best to go earlier in the day before the crowds

Many of the little shops and restaurants were closed in early January, but it was still really nice and cute. Enjoyed skiing and the monkeys.

It's definitely out of the way. We were hoping to go from here to Matsumoto, but I think it's just a bit too much travel.

Would have been best stay ever if they had some food options other than the local convenience store, but still very good, just bring your own food if you can

This was the first time I tried an onsen. They also had a great private answer. I enjoyed it for 20 minutes.
"The staff was friendly.
Upon arrival the guest gets a yukata and a key to 9 public thermal springs around the town, where he may bath freely. Note that they are extremely hot. The staff also offers a free ride to the Snow Monkey Park or Yudanaka Station in the morning."
"We had a fantastic stay at Shibu Hotel. The staff were so kind and welcoming. They made us feel so special throughout our stay. The Kaiseki dinner was such an experience. The room was very nice, clean and had nice decor. I would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Shibu Onsen. "
"This hotel is a beautiful ryokan and onsen. We stayed 2 nights and really enjoyed it. We ate breakfast and dinner at the ryokan and really enjoyed the food - meals are 7 courses and food quality is top notch. We would highly recommend to anyone looking to stay in Yudanaka. They have a private onsen which we also booked so my husband and I could use the onsen together. "
"Absolutely unique experience. If you want a fancy western style hotel, don’t stay here. If you want to have a genuinely Japanese experience, in an absolutely stunning area with some of the best snow I have seen in my lifetime, then add Kumanoyo to your list. Personally, I loved this place. "
"The servuce was 1st class from the first moment till the end. This was a highlight to our monthlong trip. Such pride in proving excellent everything. The half board option is so worth it. What a missed opportunity if you don't. The owner is so nice and lovely. She will greet you and make you feel at home."
