The hotel is terrific. I saw some negative reviews complaining about the area, but it's a typical small city downtown; and other negative reviews with complaints about shabby rooms or unworking elevators. We didn't have any of those problems, which isn't to say we didn't simply luck out.
The hotel, the lobby, the little library, they all have that classic old school feel that you usually don't find in this price range (or if you do, it's usually at a rundown place where the pipes are dodgy, the AC doesn't work, etc). The room was terrific; we got one with a soaking tub, and it was exactly what we were hoping for. We weren't originally planning on eating in the hotel restaurant, Char, but our drinks in the lobby while waiting for our room to be ready were good enough that we decided to try it out, and it was worthwhile.
The problems were with service, unfortunately. Everyone was very friendly, and the valets were great. But the front desk dropped the ball twice in our short 20 hour stay. We arrived 4 hours before check in time, and they said they'd call or text us when our room was ready, and hold our luggage until then. No problem! But when check-in time came and went, we'd heard nothing, only to find out the room had been ready and no one had reached out. Worse, they only brought us 2 of our 7 bags. We were able to find the others (one of which was a medical device), but they hadn't tagged them or made any note of them, which was troubling.
