This place seems to be owned by a cult leader, which was unexpected and a little creepy. There's a statue of him next to Socrates in the front 🙄, and a bunch of his vapid quotes posted everywhere. We wondered if we were going to be kidnapped overnight, put into white robes, and brainwashed. 😅
That didn't happen, thankfully, and overall it was a pleasant stay. The grounds are beautiful, although everything seems to be in need of some light renovation--paint is peeling, doors are sticking, etc. And the decoration style seems to have been lifted straight out of a 1985 Better Homes & Gardens magazine... it was like stepping back in time!
The room was comfortable, and the water pressure was really good. The most concerning thing I noticed was that the room didn't have a fire alarm or sprinklers. I thought those were required for fire safety, since usually you see them everywhere... but I don't know. Maybe codes are different in Michigan.
We took a walk from the hotel to a downtown type area by the river, where there are shops and restaurants. The ambience was pleasant. There aren't a lot of shop options, but it's a small town, so you can't expect everything. It was a beautiful walk, though.
The few hotel workers we met were kind and friendly. Overall, despite being a bit run down, the place seems to be decent. I'm not sure I would come back if I had the opportunity, but I did enjoy the stay.
