I was disappointed by my stay. The photos are outdated, showing a view that is now blocked by trees. The canopy was full of mildew, the balcony was missing chairs and was dirty, and there were no amenities like a hairdryer or shampoo. There are many steep, unmentioned stairs. Breakfast lacked options, limiting choices to scrambled eggs and a specific drink. I also experienced communication issues with the restaurant. Very nice friendly staff is the only good thing.

This place was very friendly and mostly quiet with a lake view and a small but good 7:30 breakfast, a bit late for me. Hot water went cold halfway through my shower. Toilet seat would not stay up when in use. No TV and only a small bedside table and two chairs on the lake view veranda. Good bed. Some mosquitos. They probably cut the lawn on the steep slope behind the place every week or two which was my unlucky day I was there. Noisy weedwack all morning and then noisy blowing for quite a while in the afternoon. A silent raking in the afternoon would have been just as fast and far quieter. Overall OK but not good value for the money.

Great view from room of the rock. Easy transport to rock by motocab. So worth it to stay overnight and go up the rock before the crowds. Staff very friendly and accomodating. Good breakfast and on site restaurant. Easy walk into town. Room cozy/rustic with bed a double. Bring your own shampoo, hair dryer and hand towel. If needed.

This hotel was very nice and a very reasonable rate. The manager was unfailingly nice. So nice. Unfortunately, there were a few things that could have been better: 1) As of Feb 2025, there is construction right next door, as new apartments are being built. It makes things quite noisy between 8 am and 530 pm. It would have been nice to receive notice about this in advance of our visit. 2) It would have been nice if shampoo was provided; 3) Breakfast was delicious; unfortunately, however, they both ran out of yogurt & had limited options for children [no cereal, no pancakes]. 4) I also thought it was too bad that, even though our room rate included breakfast, they felt it necessary to charge for more than one drink with your meal (so if you got a coffee, you got charged for wanting to drink a juice, too). 5) They had kayaks for use; but it was 50.000 for a four hour minimum. This is very expensive for Colombia to have this type of four-hour minimum at a hotel. and 6) It was also unfortunately noisy with trucks going by in the early morning. All told, a good backpacker hotel. Beautiful water views. But just felt like even though the manager was so so so nice and lovely -- the hotel itself can get better, even if you have to charge a few more pesos in a nightly rate. Nice hotel, convenient to town, but will not return

Calm and Welcoming

My partner and I had a quick weekend away in Guatàpe and we are so happy we selected La Madriguera Hotel. The owner, I believe her name was Sandra, was so warm and welcoming. The hotel is very close to the centre of Guatàpe, however, it was very quiet at the hotel. Breakfast was included in our stay and it was so lovely and calm in the little restaurant which looked out over the lake.

This hotel is rated three stars but it is pretty basic. The room is barely 10x10. We stayed 2 days. Pros were the staff, Sandra was wonderful, and our balcony and room view of the lake. What was unexpected was: the bed was basic, not great for my back, and we were only given 2 pillows, a sheet and a simple blanket. There was no air conditioning, only a standing fan, the shower was rudimentary, and only one small table and a combo hanger/shelf. Breakfast was simple, and as with a lot of hotels, egg heavy. Lastly the walk down to the room would be tricky for persons with ability issues. But if you're ok with these basics then this is a safe option.

Great stay by Guatape lake

We had a wonderful.stay in one of the cabins by the lake.The view from the cabin is breathtaking and is very relaxing and makes up for the basic style of the cabin which was a little bit small. Our cabin had little privacy as the cutains that are hard to close didn't cover the whole window. Sandra was really friendly and welcoming. And the place also offers activities on the lake such as paddleboarding and kajaking.

This hotel is very close to the city and has beautiful views of the Penal. The on the balcony bathtub was most enjoyable. The made to order breakfast was a great way to start the day. The property does have canoes and kayaks available to guests. The room was very simple. There was no coffee maker, television, or room darkening shades. I wish there was a vanity shelf to place my toothbrush and paste, hair brush, etc. and some warmer lighting.

Guatape is a gorgeous little town, and La Madriguera is a peaceful place to stay, with splendid views and warm service. You can easily walk to the center. A tuktuk from the square up the hill is 4000 COP ($1.10). Be sure to book a room with balcony. Beds are firm, sheets so soft. And the attached restaurant is simple but marvelous. Breakfast is included. I had dinner there twice. Staff speak some English, but a little Spanish is helpful. Hope I can return to kayak when there’s more water in the lake/reservoir. Guatape deserves more than an hour on a day trip from Medellin. Stay.

Hospitality is not only about money…

Guatapé is a beautiful city but we had some issues when it came to the place we stayed at. First the reservation was supposed to include a parking (that was the main reason we went there) but it turns out that they didn’t have one and we had to park our car down the hill with no security and had to bring our luggages up. They did not mention in the application that this service was not available at this time. Second, they had constructions all around and the noises were really loud and annoying at 7am ( it was not really their fault since that’s the city, but they could have at least not given us the room in front of them since the hotel was empty and we saw some vacant rooms further away). Me and my friend also reserved a kind sized bed and we ended up having a double bed with a duvet as a bed sheet, no toilet papers in the bathroom and ONE light. Also, the breakfast was supposed to be open until 9.30am, but they told us it was actually 8:30am. Everything could have been forgotten if when we told the desk lady that they could at least have told us about the parking, she replied that « we should have complained yesterday and go to another place » but we couldn’t because we would have been charged the late cancellation fees. Was definitely not worth the 100$/night price. We tried to ask for a small discount because we paid services that were not given to us. The lady refused! Guatapé is a very beautiful and tourist friendly city though.
