Our experience at the Gard Public House was one of the worst I've had. Shortly after midnight a smoke alarm in the hall outside our door started chirping (the low battery noise). I went out in the hall and noted the tall, dark ceiling--I couldn't tell where the alarm was, much less access it. And there's no staff on hand after the restaurant closes. We spent a sleepless night on the first day of our roadtrip--not a great start.
I texted the owner in the morning to suggest she send someone to change the battery and tell her there was no sleeping through that noise. Her reply was, "Sorry about that!" I let her know the reply was disappointing and heard nothing back. I was hoping she would offer some kind of consideration (another time we had difficulties with Internet stability at a B&B, the owner offered to buy us breakfast the next day). Not that it would have changed anything, but it would have told us she cared about our experience.
You know, that smoke alarm thing is completely preventable. Just mark your calendar and change the battery every 6 months.
Another feature of the property we found off-putting is the blast of kitchen exhaust you get when headed up the stairs to the rooms. We don't mind stairs at all, but there was no avoiding the hot, yucky air and sticky stair rail. Unappealing.
