Grew up in Asheville, and always loved seeing The Mountaineer Inn up on the knoll above Tunnel Road. When I went home for a visit, had to give it a try.
It’s a motel, of course, not a hotel, but a motel in the most retro sense of things, and they’ve done a great job taking care of it. The pool is pristine, and would be lovely on a warm evening. The rooms are clean, comfortable, cozy, and they’ve preserved the knotty pine panels (NOT paneling … knotty pine bead board), and it’s beautiful. Didn’t find a thermostat in the room, but didn’t need one—the temp was just right. Good old fashion (very clean) tile in the bathroom, nice showers and very hot water.
Stayed two nights, and enjoyed sitting out in front of the room in the chairs, watching the sun go down and traffic go by.
If you’re looking for a genuine motor inn, very conveniently located, and really a bit of Asheville history, highly recommend. And the price is right.
