Never Disappoints!
Always a delight to stay here. Everything runs like clockwork from the service to the quality and upkeep of the rooms and gardens and excellent restaurant. This is how a hotel should be run. Every detail is thought of and implemented and the staff exceptionally well trained to provide a top rate service.

Beautiful location. Traditional with a modern twist. Great food, good ales, friendly, helpful and attentive staff. Lovely garden area for lunch or early evenings drinks. Well appointed rooms, comfy beds and clean bathrooms.
However, because of its age there are a number of stairs in the main building and low ceilings and many rooms are located in cottages away from the main building. Umbrellas are provided but might be a factor to consider if weather very cold or wet.
Lots of history and a good central location for acccess to cities, historic sites & NT properties in the area plus good walking & cycling routes.

Beautiful place to stay! Only issue was that our room (Puddingthorn) was right at the bottom of the stairs and I was unfortunately kept awake by hearing people go up and down the stairs as well as the people in the bedroom above us.

Special hotel in unique location
My second stay here in this little gem. Had more time on this visit to do some beautiful walks on the nearby moors. Hotel offers wonderful warm service, great food, charming rooms well maintained and an idyllic location. Many times better than some 5 star hotels! Don’t hesitate - it’s a truly special place.

One of my best stays
We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay. The staff were efficient and friendly. The room was excellent and the hotel is located in a small village with beautiful surroundings and scenery. An ideal place for a get away from it all weekend.

A delightful venue in a idyllic setting
Excellent setting with really friendly staff who were prepared to go "the extra mile" to ensure customer satisfaction. Food very good, room comfortable, although being a old building ,you can expect a few "bangs, rattles, & creaks".

We booked this fabulous hotel after seeing it on Countryfile and decided to visit for my birthday. We booked the Champion rooms but unfortunately due to a problem with the heating we were put into a Canny room which was perfect. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Stayed one night before dropping daughter back to Durham university. Very charming place and set in wonderful peaceful location in the Pennines. Tasty food and lovely rooms and ambience. Breakfast exceptional - one of the best I’ve had. Would definitely return.

An Absolute Gem
Absolutely perfect hotel in a stunning rural location closec to a babbling stream, pretty walks and beautiful vistas of sheep, green meadows and gorgeous trees framed by stunning limestone walls and buildings in the tiny village. Food was superb, the Crypt bar and all common rooms were very authentic and comfortable Abbey rooms which whilst 12 century were 21st century comfort and luxury.

Another lovely stay
This our second stay and it was every bit as good as the first time. The service was exceptional. Because of 2 weddings we had to change rooms and this was made very easy for us! Both rooms were lovely, the first Weardale, had a wood burner and second room Tom Forster in the main building had the most amazing view of the garden and the hills beyond! There was even a telescope and books on astronomy to enjoy clear, wide night skies!
We ate in the restaurant both nights! The stand out dishes were the crab starter, the pork chop with nduja and tempura mackerel.

Interesting hotel with lots of history but something is missing for the price paid for a one night stay. We would have expected more but maybe it was because it was a Saturday. The restaurant was nice and the service was good but we had high expectations for the food and it turned out to be a little ordinary. Certainly no wow factor which was expected after all of the write ups. The village is pretty and if you love walking then it is a great spot. Unfortunately our view was there are lots of other places around the area that are not as expensive.
