Brilliant, stay. Beautiful location away from the hustle and bustle of the city. If you are looking for a unique experience this is it. Great food (and lots of it) very friendly staff looking to please. The accomodation is slightly aged but again a hard to beat experience Can’t recommend highly enough.

Traditional breakfast was nice. Surrounding areas was nice, great views. Ryokan building was old and a bit too worn down. Ok for a few nights only.

The staff were so friendly and helpful, we loved the traditional breakfast, they were accommodating to my husband who can’t eat fish. They have a courtesy bus that takes you to Arashiyama which I didn’t know and so glad they suggested. The futons are hard but I got used to them. They also said their onsen is tattoo friendly. But most of the place is in such a spectacular forest it was so pretty in the late autumn I will definitely be going back.

A step back in time..

This was a return journey for us given our first stay in 2023. We ate outside by the river and yet again t was a memorable experience. Great local walks also complement a fantastic environment.

A magical escape in the mountains.

The location is next to the river and feels magical. The owner, Hiroku as well as her son, Hijo were very kind to us. We stayed one night and both of our meals (dinner and breakfast) were tasty and authentic. We saw the Jingo-ji shrine nearby - a lovely 8th century shrine dedicated to the medicine buddha. We also used the in-house public bathhouse.

We spent 1 night at this traditional Japanese inn. Our room was great and it was a wonderful experience to stay somewhere with tatami mats and sleep on futons. The riverside hotel is located in the most stunning, quiet, and peaceful forest. We enjoyed exploring the quiet beauty of it. We chose the half board rate which gave us supper and breakfast. The traditional food was delicious and very filling and eating riverside while it was raining was a highlight of our family trip to Japan. We did not use the onset as it was just too hot outside and have a warm bath did not seem refreshing to us. The shuttle to the train station made things very convenient. The property is old, and can use an update, but it was the location that was important to us. We had a wonderful time.

The hotel is full of character but a bit tired. The facilities are quite basic. The menu choices are somewhat limited. The staff are very friendly and helpful, but with limited English (nothing that Google Translate could not fix). All of these shortcomings are largely compensated by magnificent location and incredible views.

The whole stay was a uniqe experience of Japan. The hotel in not brand new but the personel made this journey unforgettable. Exiting sleeping and sitting on the floor in our room. The dinner and breakfast felt like presents. Especially the breakfast looked so beautiful, a new years breakfast. I am sorry we didn't have time for a walk to the shrines. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere but they have a shuttlebus and are very helpful to fetch you up and drive you to a station in the morning.

If you are looking for a genuinely authentic and deeply immersive Japanese experience, look no further than this beautiful traditional Ryokan. While the inn is clearly old, it is immaculately maintained, showcasing a rich history without sacrificing comfort. The location is simply magical. Tucked away from the tourist hustle, the atmosphere is serene, quiet, and peaceful. We truly felt like we were staying in the forest. The property itself is a destination, featuring a gorgeous walking trail that leads along the river and a small path up to a lovely shrine—perfect for a morning hike. Visiting in October meant very few other tourists, making it feel like we had this pocket of nature all to ourselves. The staff are the heart of this place. They are not just excellent; they are caring and incredibly attentive. Their dedication to an excellent guest experience is evident in every detail. They even generously provided a complementary pickup from a local bus stop when we arrived and offer a convenient shuttle service to the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest and the train station for ongoing travel. Speaking of special touches, the complementary breakfast is a highlight—a beautifully presented and delicious cultural experience you won't forget. A special shout-out to Hiroko Hitomi, who runs this establishment. She truly embodies the spirit of Japanese hospitality, ensuring every guest feels genuinely welcome and special. We highly recommend this Ryokan for a peaceful and authentic stay.

Amazing food, want to come back already!

Reserved a room and dinner for 3 people, but had a single cancellation day of. Staff was very kind and accomodating. We took a bus to get there, and they offered us a free shuttle back to the train station in the morning after we checked out. Dinner and breakfast were filling and delicious, with lots of fish and pickled vegetables. The food was very different from what I get in the US, so it helps if you are adventurous. You and able to order a beer or soft drink, but hot tea will be provided for free. The futon style beds were different than what we're used to but there was a good variety of pillows to find something we liked. Our room had its own toilet and shower, but the onsen is open to all customers and split into men's and women's sections. There are only 19 rooms, and the baths are only closed 11am-6:30am, so you may be able to find a time to dip in solo if you're lucky.

My husband and I stayed at Kyoto Takao Kanko Hotel for a single night as a part of a larger Japan trip. We wanted to get outside of our comfort zone and experience a more traditional lodging. The Iocation was a bit far from Kyoto station but worth the trip and the owners were SO helpful with communicating directions and even picked us up at the closest bus station. We visited in February which is their quiet time and even then, the valley and location was so beautiful! The room was very comfortable and did not smell of smoke (which I was a little worried about). The owners were extremely kind, friendly and gracious! Even with a large language barrier, they were very helpful communicating well with us with a decent amount of English. They provided amazing food and hospitality. They even helped us deliver our bags to Kyoto station so that we had a smoother day site seeing. We would highly recommend staying at Kyoto Takao Kanko Hotel and will treasure our memories of the owners and our quick stay. Thank you!!
