Excellent stay! Great good but set menus and times. Isolated location. Mostly Japanese style rooms. Stairs for access to top onsen and beach. Onsen on porch is perfect. Going back

This hotel is a mixed bag, but unfortunately leans more negative.
For the positive, the onsen had a gorgeous view; the staff was excellent, kind and helpful; they offer an insanely useful free shuttle service to the main station, and it’s at a great location being beachside.
For the negatives, the entire hotel and rooms had a horrendous musty smell that smelled like wet walls and flooring. This smell never went away either (raining or not). On top of this, there were MANY leak stains on the walls, roofs and closets throughout the hotel and our room. It started to rain when we stayed and I could already hear another leak near our balcony window with accompanying dark spots on the roof where the sound was. It is an understatement to say that it’s run down and in need of heavy renovations and care. Last little negative was the pool was dried out and unfilled, and there were small stains on our futon mattress (thankfully the sheets covered it up).
I really hope it gets it too because this hotel has so much potential with

most beautiful ocean around this area.
It was beautiful stay at the yamatokan. The view from our room was so awesome. We didn’t order for the meals but we could enjoy all of our stay. There are a lot of things to see around this area if you like to enjoy the ocean. Surfing, fishing, kayaking, diving, etc...

one of the best authenic japanese seafood dinner and breakfast ever had. not for the picky eater. raw fish and seafood caught right off the shores of the hotel. older hotel with a beautiful beach right in front. if not a raw fish seafood eater, shimoda town wth quite a range of restaurants including italian and western fare. unreal indoor private bath or large public bath with excellent views. great if you want to go native!
