Everything was great at the Hanoi Elpis. A nice big room, a very comfortable bed and a great balcony to sit and have coffee, before embarking upon the chaotic streets of the old quarter. I loved it!! The staff are ultra friendly especially Linh and will offer any advice you might need. If I do go back to Hanoi, I will definitely consider staying here again.

8/10 Very good

The staff is kind and helpful. The room is clean and in a good safe location which is very important to me as I am a solo female traveler. I never felt unsafe in this area. I took off a star because (1) I was staying on the fifth floor and there are no elevators. Also (2) the water heater tank was right outside of my room so I kept hearing at night when I would sleep. Last reason for the 4 starts (3) there were two times out of the 4-5 nights that I stayed here where there was no hot water available & I was in Hanoi in the end of January where it is pretty cold. The room does have working A/C & heater. It’s not amazing but it does the job.

The hotel was easy to find despite being down a lane. It is a small family run hotel and the owner is lovely and couldn’t have been more helpful. We had a large room with two very comfortable double beds and enclosed balcony which was great given it rained the entire time. Clean towels and beds made daily and plenty of bottled water. Great location easily walk to everything. It is run down in places but that’s to be expected for the very good price. There is no lift and stairs are narrow but easy to get up and down and the owner so kindly helped with our very heavy luggage. We would happily stay again when we are in Hanoi again.

The owner was very friendly. It reminded of Midwest hospitality and the rooms were basic but clean! I really appreciated how the owner was always asking if anything was needed etc. Felt very welcoming and the location was especially for tours.

2/10 Poor

Staff was nice but room not as described. Booked a double queen room and was switched to a queen, with twin plus a cot that was very very hard. With the extra bed there was no floor space as the room was tiny and very ran down with dirty curtains on rods held up by leaning against AC unit And mold/mildew in corner. Also, salamander poo on covers that staff replaced. At least I assume/hope it was salamander poo since we saw them in the room on arrival. Stayed one night of our three nights only because we arrived after midnight. Found another hotel for remainder. I do give credit to hotel for refunding the rest of the booking.

2/10 Poor

This is a TERRIBLE hotel!!! I do NOT understand the good reviews on Hotels.com. Nothing is as pictured. We arrived after travelling from Ninh Binh- got in around 8:30pm. When we walked in, nobody was at reception- after waiting about 5 minutes and having to call out “hello” and finally someone came to reception. It was a young girl around age 12-13 who met us at the counter for her parents I guess who run the hotel. She took pictures of our passports and we heard a man yelling down to her from somewhere. The hallway was piled high with chairs and linen and furniture of sorts. Laundry and stuff piled everywhere. It was in shambles. We got our key. Despite booking a month prior, they gave us a room on the 5th floor- walk up. Just from the photos I thought it had an elevator. Not that I totally care- but it was 5 big floors up after a long day and the last flight was a super small stairway. Room was dingy. Air conditioner didn’t work well at all- and it was hot. We booked it out of there fast and thank goodness the place we stayed at earlier in the week had room. When we had to call out to give the key back, the mother finally showed up and asked if everything was OK. No. It most certainly wasn’t. I appreciate it’s a cheap hotel- but we stayed at another place a block away that was about the same price and way nicer.
