Man-made Lake Blackshear offers 20 miles (32 km) of aquatic recreational fun including boating, skiing, fishing, swimming, and more. A little more modest than other lakes, there are still 4 parks surrounding Lake Blackshear that are home to some stunning wildlife. Interestingly, not every tree was removed before the lake was formed, which means several living Cypress trees dwell in the middle of the water.
If you’d like to turn your visit to this beautiful Georgian lake into a little getaway, you’ll find many campsites and cottages dotted around its shores. If you’d prefer to keep your feet on dry land, consider a round of golf or explore the nearby Georgia Veterans Memorial State Park.

Formed in 1942, the relatively shallow Chatuge Lake is a particularly pretty spot thanks to its secluded, tree-fringed coves and distant views of the Appalachian Mountains. Alongside the usual watersports, visitors can choose to stroll the paths surrounding the lake, with their furry friends in tow if they wish.
Drawing fewer crowds than the bigger lakes, Chatuge Lake is home to the Towns County Recreational Beach. Here you can take a refreshing dip in the waters, host a barbecue, and watch the kids run rampant on the playground.

Gazing at the turquoise waters of Blue Ridge Lake, you’d be forgiven if you thought you were on some far-off tropical island rather than in north Georgia. The shorelines here might not be sandy, but 80% of them are made up of the verdant Chattahoochee National Forest so you’ll be able to snap some gorgeous photos.
There are a few recreation areas around Blue Ridge Lake, including a day-use area for quieter relaxation and watersports. Morganton Point campground is very well-equipped, complete with grills, tent pads, public bathrooms, and a great swimming area. Head to the marina to enjoy dinner with a view at the local restaurant or to hire kayaks and paddleboards.

One of the best lakes in Georgia to enjoy the great outdoors is Lake Burton, found in northeast Georgia. You’ll find the usual camping and boating facilities, while the white sandy shores of Timpson Cove Beach provide ideal spots for swimming, sunbathing, and sandcastle building.
There are more activities for the kids at the family fishing pond and at the mountain park of Moccasin Creek, and you needn’t worry about amenities either, as a few eateries and small shops line Lake Burton’s shores. The surrounding scenery is gorgeous any time of year. Visit in summer to admire blankets of rhododendrons, or in October when the thousands of trees hugging the lake burn bright with fall colors.
