The reception on arrival was disappointing - the pub wasn't particularly busy but nobody was available at check in. We moved along to the actual bar and after waiting for several people to be served the barmaid went to get the manager. This had given a couple of locals time to ask why we would want to stay at this hotel as it was "pretty rough" (their words). The manager, herself, wasn't very welcoming although the rest of the staff we met during our stay were friendly. The room itself was ok - nice clean bedding and a roomy room - however the room itself wasn't particularly clean, with a broken sink and grubby areas. We had planned to eat at least one evening meal in the pub but it wasn't very comfortable and needed a refurb. The deal included breakfast and that was good (although not much of a choice). We loved Chester (our first visit) and would be happy to return but would not return to this pub/hotel

Check in was easy also the parking bathroom was hot and couldn't turn the radiator off. We had a room on the ground floor and was bit noisy about 5 with morning staff checking in for work we had food on site was good however when I ordered and was waiting at the bar for over 5 mins to place my order a woman came up to the bar and got served in front of me the bar staff completely ignored me when I kicked up a fuss she made an excuse and said she was here earlier how flipping rude and because of that we only had food and went into town for some beers I had planned on staying in hotel for the evening couldn't be bothered after that! Would I stay again? Mmm probably but only if I have an upstairs room and it's free parking and 20 mins into town on foot over all I'd give here a 4.1 out of 5!

Overall not too bad. Room clean but lots of stairs to tackle so not recommended for older/ unfit visitors and this was not mentioned in the booking procedure. As over a pub took ages to be assisted as not a manned reception. Door banged in hallway next to our room as someone back and forth constantly until about 12.30 am. Guessing it was staff. First night football match on so rowdy, tipsy, swearing locals off putting whilst having a meal. Mediocre pub grub. Very different from previous Greene King stayed in Cheltenham which was lovely.

Not as nice as our last visit

We have stayed here before and our stay was great. This time our room was very small with limited natural light , the bed was comfy and the room and bathroom was clean and had the usual tea, coffee etc. The biggest complaint would be that there was a strange smell in the hallway leading to our room, dont quite know what it was but it wasnt pleasant. The staff were polite and the bar area was nice. I would stay here again but would book another room.
