Service was great but the room conditions were not ideal there was a water leak through one spotlight on the shower ceiling I did not sleep the entire night hearing the sound of pouring water also an awful alergie because of the mold.

The hotel is old No amenities… sheets and towels were not up to par… Could not access bill or voucher for parking which is 15 minutes away !!! Checking out … they were not serviceable or cared about our voucher or bill…, Expensive hotel with no real service …:

Service really needs to improve to justify cost

This hotel is in the BEST location ever! It is a beautiful historical building with a really nice, relaxed vibe. However, the service really needs to improve to justify the very expensive rate and to make this hotel comparable to other luxury hotels. The front desk staff are not very helpful and every time you request something, it feels like you are a burden to the staff! The sheets are not spotless clean and we actually found spots on blankets twice! When you call the front desk for anything (e.g., extra towels, etc.) it's a hit-and-miss as to whether they will get you what you need! Overall, it's in a great location and a beautiful building but not top-notch service.

Good

Good overall, but could not control air conditioning system from turning off in the middle of the night several times and turning on abruptly. Resting was a challenge for this reason. I love the location, food and service. Only thing I would change is being able to control my own air in the room and parking situation, if you are lucky you get parking in front but if it’s full the hotel offers no parking.

Hubby thought it was “fine”. ~Run!

The hotel is in a very popular historic area with lots of restaurants and shops. Very cool from that perspective. It’s exactly what we wanted. The building is hundreds of years old and in a way, it was interesting. However, they seemed to have made very few improvements. We checked in and got the keys, which were actual keys on a key chain. I was kind of excited thinking it was sort of cool and hip, but it was the first sign of how the rest of the stay would be. The interior was very dark and dated- heavy dark wood with lots of scratches and gashes in the walks and woodwork. Absolutely everything is original, which some people probably like, but I found it to be creepy. It felt like a junky old, worn out building that smelled old and dirty. As I laid in bed and looked around, the old phrase “bed chamber” came to mind and it made me laugh. I feel like the owners are hiding behind its authenticity s an excuse to not update it. Couple other things to note, there is no parking, not even on the street and no valet. You have to park in the public parking garage a half mile away and drag your luggage uphill and over cobblestones. What sums up the entire stay and really says it all is that the shampoo and soap containers in the shower were completely empty. Plenty of conditioner though. When we were dropping off the keys at checkout, I mentioned that they need to fill the shampoo containers and the response was “you didn’t mention that last night”. Huh?

Unforgettably Wonderful!

When staying in Old San Juan, we always stay at El Convento. It's absolutely centrally-located and easy walking distance to everything. However, also far enough from the main plazas that it is quiet in the evenings. The staff are friendly and go out of their way to accommodate. A BIG thank you to Jesus, our favorite bartender! He was amazing and always with a smile. The front desk was incredibly helpful with local 'must-go' suggestions including best time to visit. And, a smiling thank you to our room steward who stopped by every evening with chocolates! El Convento is wonderful and and an unforgettable experience!
