Yes, for a free hotel breakfast it had very nice choices, from bagels, English muffins, muffins and toast to pre-prepared egg sandwiches, hard boiled eggs, cheese, fresh fruit and yoghurt and various cereals. Nearest restaurant breakfast is about $40 for two, so quite a savings.

We love this inn/hotel. Located in the heart of downtown Newburyport with walkable restaurants and shops all around. Onsite parking, too. Staff is wonderful and helpful. The free breakfast is fresh, with fruit, many kinds of cereal, English muffins, bagels, muffins, hard cooked eggs, cheese, egg sandwiches, etc etc. (and if you want pancakes, omelettes, etc., Angie’s Coffee shop is steps away and opens at 6 am). Essex Inn has a variety of room types, accessible rooms, many with a gas fireplace. So cozy in winter.

When we first arrived, we were so excited to stay at this hotel, as we got a suite that was essentially an apartment to ourselves. Upon check in, I overheard other guests requesting help with their tub, as they turned on the jets, corrosion was coming out and the water would not get hot. This was a brief tell of what to expect. When we got to our suite, we were still so excited about the place as it seemed so clean, until you actually get comfortable. Our bed sheets had an unclean smell to them, and when we peeled the sheets back, we found large yellow stains, almost as if someone had peed the bed, and then remade it. We were only staying for two nights, and as to not make a big deal we slept with blankets we had in the car. When we went to shower in the morning, the shower got hot for 1 minute before becoming frigid and hot water did not return for so long we were forced to take cold showers. The shower head itself had black mold on it. Our room was very hot so we turned on the air conditioner in the room and then that started a drip noise that did not stop through the remainder of our stay. For the price, and the images, and the location, we expected a much cleaner and smoother stay. I am very surprised by all of this. Now, I would like to mention, Liz at the front desk is an absolute sweetheart, and she deserves to work in a place that lives up to her customer service standard.

While I love this area, I would never stay here again (at least in the winter). The first room I checked into felt like an attic poorly converted into a half-maintained hotel room. While it was around 0°F outside for the weekend, I realized the night I checked in that my air unit was not pumping out any heat and the thermostat was not working — let alone the broken “automated” window shade. While I had no way of knowing exactly how cold it got, I could not sleep at all, even bundled up in multiple layers, my parka, and a beanie — this was certainly a safety hazard, especially with no one available at the front desk after 11pm/midnight. The only reason I give 2 stars instead of 1 (or 0 if possible) here was that the 4th different front desk person I talked to in a 24hr period moved me to a larger room with a fireplace for my second and final night there. The first night with no heat and likely 40/50°F temperatures in the room was the most miserable hotel experience I’ve ever had in all my travels. 10/10 do NOT recommend (at least in the winter).

I stayed for 4 nights during the latest snow storm, and can't say enough about the staff. They were accomdating and man do they work hard. The Queen Suite was sizable but cozy, I I would highly recommend.

The room was fine but we didn’t realize that we were not staying at the main inn. We were next door and had to brave the cold to get to the main inn for breakfast. There was also a resonating electrical? hum that cyclically came and disappeared every 5 minutes. It was hard to get to sleep. It came from the jacuzzi tub that was right next to the bed.
