Authentic, staff and location. We enjoyed the interaction with the staff, the food, and suggestions regarding places to visit. Overall outstanding trip for us. Doug and bobbi
Barbara, 7-night trip

8/10 Very good

The staff were excellent, very friendly, helpful & welcoming. The room was clean, warm & comfortable. We booked a double superior room & although the bed was very big the room was really quite small & ready for some refurbishment. The bathroom, again whilst clean, warm & functional, was very small and looked to have been designed & installed by a poor ‘DIY’er. The breakfast was very nice with the staff service again being first class.

Our 4th stay, says it all. Food is a particular highlight.

Great place and people

Excellent staff and service in a historic setting, perhaps would benefit from some decoration maintance, however, this may well detract from the old world charm
Peter, 2-night trip

6/10 Good

Just a bit dated
David, 1-night trip

8/10 Very good

The food served in the restaurant and at breakfast was very good. The hotel staff were always friendly and helpful. Not much goes on in Hovingham but it's a good base for walking or exploring the Moors and the Howardian Hills.
Robert, 5-night trip

8/10 Very good

The staff were very pleasant and very friendly. The food was delicious and well presented, however there was only one menu for the 4 days of our stay so choice was a bit limited. The hotel is well located in beautiful countryside and is very convenient for a number of interesting places. Overall we thought that the hotel is in need of some serious renovation and updating. Our best and en-suite really was dated and the shower cubicle was very tight and not in very condition.
Peter, 4-night trip

8/10 Very good

It was several miles out from York and Pickering, so you do require transport. We couldn't find anywhere else to have food locally and had to rely on the hotel. The food was all cooked fresh, but there were limited options. Apart from this the accommodation was comfortable.
Sandra, 3-night trip

8/10 Very good

Hotel is situated in a nice little village, close to Castle Howard. The hotel was friendly, and the food good. Room was a good size, but had some issues. Noisy extractor fan in the bathroom, uneven and loose floor tiles, no overhead light, even though there was a switch for it. The staff were hard working, but perhaps over stretched and often did not appear happy. Not easy running a hotel in these times I guess. I think a good base for exploring the area.

4/10 Fair

Lovely staff. Everything else subpar

Cannot fault the staff, they were all lovely, friendly and helpful. Otherwise it was overpriced and underwhelming. While it was quite clean, our room was not what was advertised online. We were expecting a double and a single bed and instead had 2 singles pushed together with a gap in the middle and a mattress on a 3inch base, essentially on the floor, not ideal for a 65 year old woman! We paid for and ordered breakfast and it was disappointing and incorrect. Toast was soggy and there were several parts missing including no bacon and a missing croissant. Other guests complained of the same issue. The building itself is mostly okay but there are areas with messy/unfinished painting, the bath needed replacing as there was a black mark/stain inside, and the shower was small and uncomfortable. There was also black mould around the taps. The room's door was also an issue as there was a gap underneath and the keyhole was big enough for anyone passing to look through directly into the room. Thoroughly disappointed and upset as we paid above average for a special birthday trip away and would have been better off in a generic budget hotel.

Tim, 1-night trip

8/10 Very good

An okay b&b but needs an uplift and redecoration. Have to pre-order fill for breakfast and then wait 20-25 minutes from time you said you would be in breakfast! A bit old fashioned and slow and over priced!!

6/10 Good

Very tired hotel, in much need of refurbishing. Staff and food very good, but not enough to make up for the hotel’s poor condition.
charles, 2-night trip

8/10 Very good

Historical building full of character, lovely staff.
Graham, 2-night trip

10/10 Exceptional

Very enjoyable stay while visiting the area.
Val, 1-night trip

10/10 Exceptional

Slightly dated ie single glazing etc. but just as we like. Old fashioned standards
David, 1-night trip

6/10 Good

Our standard double was quite small and the bathroom definitely very bijou. It was clean but more attention to dusting would be good plus impossible to watch TV from the bed and chairs were old and uncomfortable. The bar and bar/ restaurant (cricketers) were ok and staff pleasant. Food was good and plentiful. All in all, the hotel is in dire need of an update. I would stay again as I liked the bar, food and country feel about the place.

Lovely Pub

Lovely Yorkshire pub with rooms on site and across road. Great breakfast, comfy bed and reasonable sized bedroom with on suite bathroom. Great location. Would stay again.
