Great stay at The Sands

Top choice for Omapere/Opononi stay. Large establishment with beachfront and courtyard units. We appreciated being upgraded to the Beachfront. Idyllic sitting in our patio area enjoying the seaview. Nice Bar and Restaurant with a deck to enjoy the good weather and sunsets. Plenty of free parking. Helpful staff

Location Location Location

Location its all about location. Superb views of the Hokianga harbour, the golden sands and the friendly atmosphere of the staff from the moment of arrival until departure. The rooms are spacious and very clean. Very satisfied with the whole experience which made the weekend very enjoyable.

We were upgraded to a Villa which was spacious and clean. Comfortable bed. Plenty of towels and lovely shower/bath/handwash products in the bathroom. The restaurant dinner meal was delicious and generous. Continental breakfast was good, but I would have liked to have seen a better selection of fresh fruit on offer, rather than the canned fruit salad. All up it was a great stay at The Sands.

Stunning location & beautiful facilities although some area's of the facilities are old, you can see they are making improvements. Our room had stunning beach front views but we had a beautiful Pohutukawa tree blocking some of that, so next time I'll ask for a room on bottom floor. Our superior room with verandah had plenty of space, comfortable king bed and all the basics we needed, only complaint is we couldn't lock the door from the inside.

I changed our whole holiday plans around to stay here as it looked so beautiful, and I guess that's why we were so very dissapointed. From the moment we walked up the filthy stairs things just didn't get better. Inside the room was a horrible smell like cheap room spray or disinfectant. The ocean view room was looking into a massive tree. I have nothing against the tree but maybe lower people's expectations and therefore they won't be so dissapointed. The Restaurant staff were lovely just such a pity the food let our experience down. The snapper was inedible with its gluggy batter and just added to our overall worst experience in our 3 weeks of travelling from the South Island to the top of the North Island. I really hope something is done to clean up the whole place

Good hotel choice in Orewa

Overall good hotel right at the water. We had a room without sea view, quiet with parking directly in front of the room. Bed was super comfy, however the room could've had a little more thought put into it. There were no electrical outlets next to the bed, plus the switch for the night stand lights could not be reached when lying in bed. The windows could not be closed, so we had bugs inside. The bathroom did not have a fan to expel the moist air, which causes problems on the ceiling. In addition to that, the joints in the shower could use some extended cleaning or replacement. Overall good (8/10) but some room for improvement.

The view & sounding beach area is fantastic. Beautiful spot to wake up to! Our room needed a really good vacuum, especially behind bed side tables etc. The outdoor furniture on our deck was really dirty as well as the tiles. Nothing that a water blast wouldn't fix. The shower curtain is well passed it's used by date. Only place for it is the bin. Daily room service doesn't include making beds, which we found strange. Overall, it's all very tired looking. The restaurant had lovely food & great service. If some general maintenance was done the property & rooms would be so much better & a delight to stay at
