Great stay in the nature

Perfect stay at the falls. The overall location is faithful to the offer. the room was perfect. Also, the common places were great: living room with games, and pool.

Andrew Carnigie's country estate

The house is amazing, its in the process of being upgraded, special features like the Rennie Mackintosh window. Great views and great hostess.

Very tired and in need of modernisation. Was probably a beautiful place at one time. View is amazing, location is amazing and staff very nice.

Creepy and a bit strange place. It needs some maintenance, the road up to the hotel not the least. However, the interior has elegance and charm and the room was clean, comfortable and quiet. Do not miss out the peacocks in the garden.

We enjoyed our stay at Aultnagar very much. The room was huge, clean and sumptuous befitting the estate. The kitchenette handy and adequate (all communicated beforehand). Looks like the property will be going through renovations but there were no works to disrupt our stay. The entrance, halls and rooms were already beautifully renovated.

This summer getaway for Andrew Carnegie and his family was a unique experience for us and a quiet respite amid the highland landscape. On first impressions the building on the outside has lost some of its luster but the inside is slowly being returned to its original old world craftsmanship. The rooms are clean and comfortable and after that long walk or bike ride a nice place to recoup. We enjoyed staying and feeling a little of this history surround us and can now add rubbing shoulders with Andrew Carnegie's ghost to our travel story.

Pro: A beautiful historic building with a grand stair entrance and sky lights. Some rooms even have bed canopies. Comfortable bed, warm water and heating that you can adjust not much to complain about. Loved the contactless check in. Private showers, linen and towels included as well as free parking. Access to a shared full kitchen. Con: The building is beautiful but old and in need of some upkeep. It is a bit disheartening to see that some of the fixes had a strong DIY feel.

Very lovely room with view overlooking forest. Self-catering, but staff had provided welcome basket with enough rolls etc. for solid breakfast. Kitchen has fridge, 4-pit electric cooker and several ovens so any kind of meal can be prepared here. The building is a former lodge of Andrew Carnegie and I had a spacious room with four-poster bed and couches near the window overlooking the forest. Signposting could be a little bit better.

My partner and I stayed for two nights while exploring the central Highland and loved it! The property owner was very welcoming and gave us some historical background of the building which is really interesting. The hotel is situated up a hill which results in stunning glen views from the rooms and grounds. When exploring the grounds you may also stumble across ducks, hens and even peacocks, adding to the uniqueness of the property. The communal kitchen is well equipped, and again offers lovely views. There is also a pool table, swingset and lounge area that guests can use during the day. In addition to this hotels interesting history and picturesque views we also found it to be very peaceful.

There is nothing nearby, must buy something to eat before you get there. And there is no hairdryer provided. But the building is beautiful and the kitchen have a good view of sunset.

Wouldn’t recommend

Didn’t particularly enjoy my stay here. I was expecting an actual hotel and not a series of self check-in rooms via lock box (to be fair to them I obviously hadn’t read the check in instructions so that’s on me) but the whole place gave me a strange vibe. There was no one else in the building, no staff or guests at all. The building is a big old ex-manor type place, and it gave me strong “the Shining” vibes. Still convinced the place is haunted. Eerily quiet at night, bed was ok but I didn’t sleep well. The road up to the property is rough, I was in a 4x4 and it was still dodgy. Entrance isn’t particularly clear (it does say entrance on the door but it looks like a back door that staff would use). Group of chickens roaming the grounds which was amusing but I almost ran them over a few times while trying to park. Room was disappointing. Outdated and dirty, I found what looked like the cap of a mouthwash bottle with dried blue liquid in it on the floor in my room, and the bath had some nasty looking grime in it. Bed was ok if a bit overly soft. Signal was very poor. There is Wi-Fi but it wasn’t working when I arrived. Phoned the number provided and was essentially told to find the router and fix it myself (the guy was polite, no one was on site so there wasn’t much he could do). This worked until the router was inexplicably removed at 9pm until 8am, which is concerning considering the bad signal. Nice view from the rooms at the front of the building though.

The hotel allocated a room and entry instructions which was changed in a later email including a change to the check in time. The property is also very tired.
