"The mountain views are simply five-star - breathtaking and unforgettable. We had hoped the overall stay would match, but found ourselves mildly underwhelmed. The room was lovely, though some classic luxury touches would have elevated the experience, slippers, extra blankets, and herbal teas would go a long way.
Breakfast was included and generally pleasant, though service was inconsistent across our two mornings, the second day was notably better.
The on-site restaurant was very expensive for what it delivered - decent food, but far from exceptional. You're paying for the view.
The sauna was a genuine highlight and real treat in the cold weather. However, a welcome tour of the facilities and printed spa information in the room would have helped us book treatments in advance, as none were available on the day.
Some facilities show their age and could benefit from updating, but the location is undeniably splendid and the four-poster bed was magnificent. The gardens are delightful, beautifully kept and wonderfully serene.
We loved venturing beyond the hotel: the walk up to St. Mark's Church was lovely, and the roadside food at Redlight was a fantastic find. A short stroll downhill brings you to Café Blue, wonderful food at great prices, delicious cakes, and the warmest of welcomes. We had a frosty reception at the Craighton Estate so decided to skip the coffee tour, not a friendly place."
"Easy daytime walking up & down HOPE ROAD, to Bob Marley Museum & Devon House. The Shirley has the very basics covered, no frills, but good location. "
