Turquoise waters lap against Kailua Beach's powdery white sand, creating a postcard scene that locals somehow take for granted. Kayak to the twin Mokulua Islands offshore, where turtles bask on rocks with the nonchalance of sunbathers. The Lanikai Pillbox Trail rewards a moderate climb with panoramic views that explain why Obama chose this neighborhood for his winter retreats. Kawainui Marsh offers a different kind of beauty, with ancient fishponds that gave the town its name ('two seas' in Hawaiian). After swimming, the shave ice stands along Kailua Road provide rainbow-colored relief from the tropical sun. For a less-crowded experience than Waikiki, Kalama Beach Park offers the same perfect waters without the tourist crush.
