The medieval rock hewn churches of Lalibela are a world wonder by any definition. Carved out of the surrounding bedrock in the 12th & 13th centuries, the churches were intended to be a "New Jerusalem", an African Jerusalem. The greatest of these churches is the iconic Bete Giyorgis. Today the 11 churches are part open air museum and part active pilgrimage destination for Ethiopians. "Stayed in the treehouse and it was excellent. The view of the sunset was visible and I slept like a baby each night. Will definitely stay there again.
