The remote location rewards you with exceptional stargazing and the constant soundtrack of Pacific waves.

Puna Palisades

Black sand kisses the shore of Kehena, a hidden paradise where the rainforest meets the Pacific. Locals and adventurous travelers gather at the clothing-optional beach beneath swaying palms. The dramatic coastal cliffs and occasional steam vents create an otherworldly backdrop for your island escape. Pack your own meals or drive to Pahoa town for fresh Hawaiian fare since dining options are limited in this remote enclave. Ma'ukele Lodge

Ma'ukele Lodge

10/10 Excellent
"Staying here was a once in a lifetime experience! We were just steps away from the ocean which was breathtaking to view from lava rock cliffs. Our accommodations really set the vibe for this part of the Big Island. It was very tropical and like living in a rain forest with the greenery and fragrant flowers. The outdoor shower was a refreshing experience ( though an indoor shower is available, this outdoor shower is a must-do). Everything you need for a comfortable stay is provided, many little thoughtful touches. The accommodations were very clean. The hosts are very friendly and helpful. They are very passionate about living on this part of the island and eager to share their excitement with you. Breakfasts are delicious! Especially all of the fresh fruit. The lodge is a destination in and of itself, not just a place to sleep after seeing other places on the island."
