The hotel beds were the best I have ever slept on and I have travelled a lot! The hotel itself needed some TLC but it was safe, quiet, and comfortable. It was perfect for our family of 4. The owner was warm and welcoming. He even review his plans for renovations as he just purchased the hotel less than a year ago. I expect this place to be beautiful once the renovation are completed. I highly recommend this hotel!

The manager went out of his way to help us. We left our bags in the office because we arrived late in the evening from the train, and wanted to get food. When we came back to check in, he had taken our bags to our room for us. Such a nice man, and told us about things. This is a verynice place to stay.

Booking Cancelled

Unfortunately there was an issue with my room which meant my booking was cancelled but the team made good by booking me in to another motel which was a budget accommodation but apparently it was more expensive than my original booking at the Aotea Motel.

2/10 Terrible

We checked in on 30th of June, and this was by far the worst motel experiences we’ve ever had. The room was absolutely not as pictured, and the condition of the place was absolutely shocking. - The room was extremely dated and dirty - There were holes in the walls, peeling paint, and carpet lifting in places - The shower was disgusting – there was mould, grime, a used bar of soap with hair on it, and even used a loofah left behind - Hair and dirt were all over the carpet, so it clearly hadn’t been cleaned - The kitchen surfaces were wiped, but the cabinets were greasy, and one cabinet door was broken - We found an opened carton of milk in the fridge that had expired on 8 June (our stay was on 30 June) -The toilet seat was yellowing, the blankets were thin despite it being mid-winter, and there was a mystery stain on the bed (don't even want to know what it is!) We left immediately and booked another motel in town that was actually clean and welcoming. When we raised the issue with the manager, we got no apology and no refund. Even Expedia tried to get a refund on our behalf, but they were unsuccessful. We were later told by another motel that this property is often used for emergency housing — something that should have been disclosed upfront. This place is misleading, unhygienic, and completely unacceptable. If I could give it negative stars, I would!

Ok for short term stay

Comfort was ok but bed too hard for my liking. The rooms need updating with efficient heat pumps and appliances such as hairdryers. Also small maintenance jobs needing to be done, eg windows sealing to prevent cold coming in.
Christine, 5-night trip

6/10 Okay

The rooms were very clean and the bedding was spotless. But my daughter had to swap beds because the first one was so uncomfortable. We couldn't sit on the sofa as it was very worn and felt like you were falling through it. The water pressure in the shower was non-existent. The motel in general felt bit tired, and the fittings were very dated. It was fine for a weekend where we didn't need to stay in all of the time, and convenient for getting into the cbd and to the competition we were attending.

The staff/owners here are incredibly friendly and helpful. The bed was soft, the room was clean and seemed relatively recently refurbished. The area doesn’t seem particularly nice, and there was some noise at night which woke me up.

Not what we paid for

I have worked for more than 15 years , managing and cleaning in motels. When I made the booking online, the unit looked bright, clean and spacious. I took note of the room layout , size etc. The room given ,was completely different from what I was led to believe I had booked. It was small, cramped ,very dated, no nets on the bedroom windows, curtains hanging. Electrical tape over cracks in the bathroom door. Cracks in the walls and ceiling. An upside down shower mixer and thread bare shower curtain. No milk was offered , we had to go ask at the office for the wifi password. The managers were nice enough but barely onsite. One of our group checked out early being so disappointed with the room. I would never stay here again.

The property is a bit dated but the hosts more than make up for that. Had an issue with being given a studio unit rather than the one bedroom unit that was booked on this site but the hosts moved us to a bigger unit as soon as they could. Easy off street parking and convenient to the city centre.
