Has potential

The food and the service was very good. The place itself could be amazing. The thing that let it down for us was the cleanliness. It felt like the whole place could do with a deep clean.

Breakfast is NOT included, despite what Expedia may be displaying. It's a property where you have to make do with what's available. The inn staff/owners are quite helpful, and chances are that most of your problems would be solved by asking for their assistance. Be prepared to accept a few hiccups, like the lack of WiFi in your rooms (either borrow the WiFi from the bar and download your stuff beforehand, it treat it as a digital detox?) or the door lock being quite tough to open (it's an old building). Other than that it was a satisfactory stay, location is quite nice and the food was lovely.

Nice quiet country location

We booked family room for 4, the room had a made up double bed and a sofa which only had a duvet, no linen or pillows. Only 2 mugs for teas. On arrival we were told they didnt do breakfast which was included in our stay, the Landlord then cooked us croissants the night before to take to our room for the morning. The bathroom was clean but the room had webs in the beams and we had 2 massive spiders! The views were great and only 10 minute drive to St Ives. We ate at the Engine Inn in the evening and the food was lovely, a friendly pub with a friendly Landlord.

2/10 Poor

The room was full of mould, drain was blocked, bathroom was very filthy, bed clothes were stained, neither Wi-Fi nor food available also both were advertised. The room was just not suitable for renting out and no effort done to make up for it.

Don't choose this hotel

It is totally unacceptable, We pay £89 for one night, we are late check in about 10p.m. We found that there are many spider nets on the top of the room, white and big, just like a abandoned house just leave there for decades. We request change room, but there are only two and fully booked. Couldn't imagine who would like to sleep over night facing the spider net. And we ask the lady could we refund or refund half to us because we are decide to book another room cause my little daughter is scared to cry. She said we could apply online through hotels.com but she turn around refused to refund us by replying hotels.com, I don't know why the hotels.com only protecting their own interests. It is unreasonable and unacceptable paying £89 for living a room, like this one, it is my first time in my life go to a hotel room like this. Nerver book this hotel.

A pub stay as it should be.

Lovely proper pub stop. Large room. Food was good and well stocked bar. The staff and customers very pleasant which as a lone traveller is always nice. Recommended.

6/10 Good

Staff were very friendly and accommodating and the Inn is in a great location, with generous, spacious rooms. The breakfast was delicious. Our stay would have been perfect if any care had been given to the standards of hygiene. Our room was covered in cobwebs, the shower drain covered in hairs, and the same with the bedsheets. It's a shame that it is not seen as important to not use pillow cases with mascara stains, or to carry out the basic task of vacuuming a rug, which was pretty disgusting. When I mentioned this to the staff, I was told that this was due to the hotel being 'dog friendly'. A very poor excuse for not maintaining basic standards of hygiene. Overall, a few basic steps would have really elevated our stay.

Look beautiful but poor up close.

The Engine Inn was brilliantly located between Penzance and St Ives and had fantastic local views. The room was spacious and had the potential to be amazing. Unfortunately it was not. The bed stunk although the linen was freshly washed. Bathroom was an excellent size, really useful if you require a wet room but covered in mould and people’s hair who had used it before us. No toilet roll and now shower gel etc to use. The room looks beautiful but it’s really let down. Be warned, if you are downstairs the take ear plugs because the noise from upstairs is so loud - not much management can do about that, it’s an old building with old floorboards but just a helpful tip.

Look no further for the quaint country experience

We had such a lovely stay at the Engine Inn! The countryside views from the garden are absolutely stunning, the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail and chat with the locals. Owner Bianca was so friendly, and she offers an amazing full breakfast for a great value. The rooms are very cozy, with the exposed beams and rustic decor reminiscent of a simpler time. We would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a nice country escape!

local pub experience

friendly staff. convenient to entire area. must have car to fully see everything. true local pub experience. very large accommodations. happy to see wash cloths. actual 1700 building. dog allergic should not book as dogs are abundant in pub where breakfast and restaurant is.

Large room in converted farm building

The room was far above our expectations. The views were outstanding, although very rural only 5 min drive to St Ives so best of both worlds. The pub itself served good beer and great food and we will return.

Perfect for couples on a budget.

The landlady of this quaint little pub was very welcoming. The views are absolutely stunning. The accomodation was spacious but a little basic (converted stone barn with a slightly under power heater). We are looking forward to a return visit in slightly warmer weather.

On arrival was told no food as it was out of season. Nothing on web site stating this. Told no cooked breakfast before 8am but could have breakfast basket. Room freezing and took till the morning to warm up No one available at check out waited nearly ten minutes in the end left key behind bar

No evening food

Arrived late after a long journey. The staff were unhelpful. No food available - unbelievable. We had to travel a further 3 miles and then faced a half-mile walk to nearest restaurant. Avoid this place.

Great Rural Pub

Thank you to Karen and Adrian for making us feel so welcome and nothing was too much trouble. The pub has a real friendly atmosphere where locals make you feel part of the community. The accommodation across the yard was very pleasant and spacious. The king size bed was very comfortable. It is not far from St Ives and Penzance but you do need a car.

10/10 Exceptional

A wonderful stay

The guest house itself is located at the back of the pub while facing a beautiful country side view. Rooms are nicely decorated and the bed is comfortable. The best part about the experience was definitely the hotel staff! Everyone was so friendly and easy to talk to. Instead of given a breakfast menu to choose from, we were told the chef could make anything that we want. Because we have to leave early on the second day, the owner brought us takeaway breakfast to make sure we had something to eat in the morning. She even called us a taxi to ensure we get on coaches on time. The disavantage is that there were no signal or wifi in the inn. You would have to come to the pub for wifi. The inn is located somewhere between St Ive's and penzance. There is only one bus that goes past the hotel, so it may be less suitable for those thinking of traveling around cornwall without a car.

Lovely Pub..

Lovely Pub and very dog friendly..Would recommend the Pulled Pork absolutely delicious..Great room which is ideal if you need to come back early, Maybe because of weather as it's separate to the Pub..Very quiet..Only qualm was maybe the Wet Room needs tidying up a bit..Will definitely go there again if we are in those parts again....

THE ENGINE INN IS FABULOUS

This is a country pub with all the trimmings. The owners, Adrian and Karen are the perfect hosts. The room we stayed in was perfect. The walk in shower was brilliant, Perfect for the less mobile traveller. It was spotlessly clean and the food was excellent.Great breakfast as well. Whenever I am back in this area I will definitely stay at The Engine. Full marks all round. It is also dog friendly.
