Howard Johnson by Wyndham Pigeon Forge is undoubtedly the most unpleasant hotel I have ever experienced. From the outside, it appears somewhat normal, but once directed to the rear of the hotel for my room, it felt akin to being in the slums of New York City. Upon my arrival, there was no front desk attendant present, and I was greeted by the odor of marijuana emanating from a vehicle parked in front of the building. After waiting several minutes without any front desk service, a young woman appeared to emerge from the marijuana-scented car, which had at least one male occupant laying back with his foot outside the car window. While this was not a major concern, upon entering my room, I was overwhelmed by the smell of marijuana wafting down the outdoor hallway, and inside my room, the stench was reminiscent of dog feces and general dog odor. I approached the front office, and the same woman accompanied me back to my room, informing me that there was only one cleaner available and that they could provide me with a different room the following day, as I was staying for two nights. She also suggested that I use air freshener to combat the unpleasant dog smell that had permeated the room. After a grueling six-hour drive through the highest mountains I have ever encountered, coupled with nightmarish bumper-to-bumper traffic, I realized it would likely take an hour just to exit onto the main road due to the gridlock.
