Stranded 1 night in Rio & exhausted. Booked a room at Modernistas Hospedagem e Arte because it's in a traditional touristic neighborhood, as opposed to the beaches. I already know (& love) the beaches but was coming to Rio after 2 wks on Florianópolis beaches. Missed my flight to US at Riogaleão, arriving after midnight. Check in ends at 6pm, but for a small late check-in fee, the reservations agent secured an onsite caretaker, Antonieta, to await me. By the time I picked up my bag, cleared customs, secured a willing Uber driver, arrived at property 1:30am. Antonieta was happily awaiting me, assisted with baggage, showed me the room (an amazing king suite!) and how to use locks-keys. I was exhausted & just wanted to rest. I was happy to find that breakfast was 9am-12pm, a huge plus for night-owls or late arrivals. Room was stunning. Patio door is a museum piece. The entire place is a treasure trove full of modernist objects, design and prose. After a great night's sleep on a comfortable king bed, I had the breakfast included in the (very reasonable) rate. It was healthy & plentiful. I do functional training, had lifted a ton of weight the day before & not eaten since lunch in Floripa 24 hours earlier. I needed calories & protein. The breakfast provided both and was absolutely delicious. I spent the balance of the day exploring the place & the galleries. This place is a MUST if you want to see real Rio/Rio ART. Recommending to friends & everyone else.

My room was accessible in the foyer-like lobby adjacent to the art gallery. The door appears to be an extension and people may try to walk-in so best to look your door with a little turn-key in a key hole. My room was large and fit a king bed with room for a night stand a a desk. The bathroom was sizable also. There's a door covered in small mirrors that open to a very cute private patio. Also there are literary quotes printed on the walls from a popular author.

A true gem in a perfect area. Loved our stay!

The Modernistas hotel is a true gem. We're an American couple who were staying in Rio for one evening. The hotel is small, adorable, unique, and in a terrific area, with plenty of bars, restaurants, and clubs within walking distance. It's also only a short cab ride to famous Rio destinations, including Ipanema, Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf, etc. Do keep in mind that this is a very unique establishment and won't be a good fit for some travelers. The rooms are bizarre (but in a good way!) and it's all old-school. For example, you get a set of keys for getting in and out of the place, with no keycards or other fancy systems. There's no room service, no full restaurant, no pool, etc. If you are looking for those types of things, this isn't the place for you. If what you're looking for is a unique establishment to spend a nite or two at, this is a terrific fit. This is perfect for travelers like us who spend as little time as possible at the hotel and enjoy something different. One more thing to note: the rooms have very, very high cielings and are cooled by a mini-split. With Rio's temps easily getting up to 100F, the little machine needs to work pretty hard to keep the room cool. We were comfortable, but if you want your room to be an icebox, you won't be happy. Finally, the woman who owns/runs the place is incredibly sweet. We speak very little Portuguese and she speaks very little English, but she was patient and friendly while showing us the ropes. Would stay again!

Apart from being centrally located in a historic neighborhood with a lot of artistic flare, the staff are very welcoming here. I thankfully arrived to the hotel when there was an art walk. It was great to be there and visit all of the galleries, that the Modernistas Hotel participated in as well. I highly also suggest having the breakfast. It is really good! The staff were also really nice to provide us with clean towels every day and recommendations for what to visit in the area.

Infested with mosquitos!

The hotel is cute as it's located inside a gallery, but it's infested with mosquitos. We woke up every morning covered in bug bites. It was the only terrible hotel experience of our three-week trip. We got bitten nowhere else in the country except in this hotel so going back to our room was repeatedly unpleasant. Told the owners about it and they accused us of making it up. We would never stay there again.

Hidden fees if check in late. Not only that while it is eritter R$50 for late check in, owner is not shy to charge $100 or more depending on customer. No one is available after 6pm and so you are on your own. Own claims to cancel my pre paid reservation eithout proper refund. Even Expedia still showed reservation to bevthere and that means that it is not acserious business or basically a scam depending n who you are. Nightmare, just avoid it at all costs.

Proposta interessante porém entrega pouco

Tudo começou com a insistência de saber a que horas faríamos o check in. Eu havia informado um horário, mas ocorreu um contratempo e tive que chegar mais tarde. Recebi um whatsApp informando que me esperariam até às 15:00, quando na semana anterior, eu havia confirmado e o check in ia até às 17:00. Informei o contratempo e me responderam: "ok!". Chegando lá, fomos instalados na suite Tarcila do Amaral, supostamente temática, mas só tinha um imã de geladeira do Abaporu... de resto era um quarto normal. O check in foi feito às pressas, pois não me solicitaram preencher nada... Saímos e voltamos para dormir. Na manhã do Check out, uma funcionária revolveu bater papo às 8:00 da manhã na porta do quarto... o som parecia dentro do nosso quarto.

Estadia rápida apenas para dormir.

O estabelecimento está em boas condições, tudo dentro do quarto funcionando (ar, tv, chuveiro e etc). Para quem não conhece o bairro, Santa Tereza, não é de “fácil acesso” e tive dificuldade de locomoção na minha chegada (20:00) pois os Uber’s não aceitaram a corrida e todo taxista quer ir sem taxímetro alegando a dificuldade em subir, a proximidade com o aeroporto Santos Dumont e alegando que o bairro é perigoso durante a noite. Então isto deve ser levado em consideração dependendo do tipo de viagem que vai fazer ao RJ, para sair de lá tem que ser de carro. Precisei cancelar a segunda diária por esse motivo e achei que poderia ter sido melhor atendido pelo proprietário, mas no final tudo foi resolvido. Outro detalhe que deve ser observado ao realizar a reserva é o horário do check in, até às 18:00, ou seja, é um detalhe que no geral ninguém lê e se não podem fazer check in em qualquer horário não deveriam deixar disponível nos sites de locação como disponível para reserva. Então, atenção quanto ao seu horário de chegada para não ter esse tipo de dificuldade.
