We had the most wonderful stay at this boutique hotel. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and we had a lovely room - Masefield, which had a large sitting area, a patio and a large bathroom. Will certainly return.

Sublime

This was a wonderful experience, very friendly staff who were always ready to help, offering glasses of chilled water in the spacious and well-furnished public rooms and alcohol in the evenings. We stayed in the large Shakespeare room, often used as a Bridal Suite. The spa is great, with a good sized pool, a jacuzzi and unusual sauna. Really good breakfasts served in bedrooms and at the nearby sister-hotel Milsoms. The fine dining at the main restaurant on the nearby River Stour was sublime, with exquisite food, terrific service, a knowledgeable sommelier and wonderful ambience at tables outside under large parasols. Staff offer free shuttle service to and from both restaurants whenever required. A super weekend, we will return.

There are so many elements that are great about this hotel - the large bathrooms, magazines and book in the rooms (so rare now), the Jo Loves products in the bathroom, the fresh milk in the fridge! B U T the place needs more staff, there was only one person who was front of house at any time - managing the bar, driving the shuttle to / from the restaurant. It shows - the carpets on the stairs were not hoovered and the place is a bit sadder for it.

Super luxurious! Couldn't ask for more. The staff are amazing. The property is breaktaking and the spa facilities are wonderful! Also make sure to visit both restaurants as they both serve super tasty food. Hope to make it a yearly trip!

Overall a nice property, nice amenities and setting. Some of the decor not to my taste (black fur bead throw a little gaudy). A nice sized room but bathroom floor coverings not the best quality and could feel rickety floor boards underneath. We were a little disappointed with the rules and service we received regarding the spa. Upon checking out in the morning were asked our plans for the day and clearly stated to reception we intended to use the spa. We did this but after a couple of hours we were approached by a member of staff informing us we should have paid £25 per person to use the spa the following day and would have to leave immediately. I find this a particular bugbear of mine with hotels and hospitality venues and really shows the ones worth returning to and not. I firmly believe the facilities outside of the room should be available to use for guests on the day they check out. Small gesture that goes along way. Especially in this case as it was clearly an incredibly quiet day (there was one other couple in the entire place) a judgment call could have been made rather than the rude attitude taken. This is the major difference for me between a place that is there to enhance their guests stay and one just looking at them as a monetary number. We were about to order lunch which they subsequently missed out on. In my opinion if you look after one the other looks after itself and vice versa. Based on this would not recommend and would not return again.

Brilliant service, very good stay

Fabulous service, couldn’t fault that. A few suggestions, for £27.50 pp I would expect breakfast to be cooked freshly, it was very lukewarm from the hot plates. A small point but the room key attachment being a silicon spoon made no sense or representation to the brand? The staircase carpet was quite dirty on arrival. You can see the building being a bit jaded in parts. The patio area on Tennyson was hugely uninspiringWe did have a very nice stay 4* rather than 5* which we had hoped for, sorry. Once again though the service was outstanding from reception to the spa to Milsoms.
