A lovely friendly market town. We bought local produce from one of the butchers. We felt there was a good community atmosphere and a relaxed attitude among local shoppers- a far cry from the frenetic lifestyle of busier, more built up towns and cities

Good
Not just the starting point for the North York Moors Steam Railway. There is a fine old castle (in ruins) and a church with historic 15th century wall paintings.

Nice place to explore, walked around the castle which was disappointing as seemed very neglected-just a bit of vegetation maintenance on a regular basis would make a difference. Found a nice shop called the Hideaway to look round. Roads were busy.

Pickering is nice but we found it limiting for evening meals. Typical pub food available, a couple of Indian restaurants and an Italian. I'm sure there are plenty of cafe's but we didn't spend the day in Pickering, just the late afternoons.

The pubs and nearby attractions (steam railway, Castle Howard, the north Yorkshire moors to name just a few) are very good.

"Good hotel in excellent location. Room was very hot but no way of controlling temperature other than opening window which led to noise. Breakfast was excellent. Disappointed that pool didn’t open until 8:00 a.m. "
"We stayed 2 nights to ride the cinder trail to whitby and back then a night out in scarborough. We had evening meals both nights, the food was great."
"We stayed one night.
The inn is perched up right on the edge of the moors with some stunning views.
It is a 2 min walk down the hill to the beautiful hamlet or up the very steep hill to the ruins of the old iron ore furnaces.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was fantastic we would book again.
