We've always thought of visiting Kagoshima and we think this city is the best of all the cities we've been to. Sakurajima island is a must to visit - pity we didn't experience the black sand bath due to rain - means a return visit is necessary

Good
Very few non-Japanese tourists in this working port city that doubles as a hot springs resort

It's a great little city to visit with great scenery and an easy to use transit system of trams, trains, buses and taxis.

"I have stayed here once before - it's perfect for a quick stay in Kagoshima city. Located in a quiet corner of Tenmonkan near shops and restaurants. It's very clean and quiet. The breakfast is a set menu, which I do not recommend for vegetarians/vegans (am one myself) but the parts I could eat were good. I will stay again if I need to stay in the area for a short time. "
"The onsen facilities are wonderful.
The hotel is a short walk from Tenmonkan, where many shops and restaurants are located. Most of the attractions in Kagoshima Chuo are walkable from the hotel."
"Excellent budget friendly hotel, 7 eleven is next door with family mart 1 min away. Bed was really comfortable. Friendly staff and breakfast was great. Walking distance to sakurajima ferry."
