Windsor

Windsor lies on the bank of the River Thames, some 23 miles west of central London, and the town’s royal connections date back to the time of William the Conqueror. Today, visitors can tour the lavish precincts of Windsor Castle, whose inner chambers are bedecked by oil paintings and regal finery, and where you can watch the pomp of the changing of the guard.

For designer-label shopping, visit the Windsor Royal Shopping Centre, set in an arcade that’s actually an old railway station. Then stroll on to Alexandra Gardens, where lush lawns and mature trees stretch along the river.
