Castle in silhouette Dark clouds fill the sky as a summer cloudburst is about to break over the ruins of Castell Newydd Emlyn. The castle, occupying in a splendid defensive position within a tight curve of the river, was founded the early C12 but changed hands a number of times between the Welsh and the Normans or English. It was destroyed by Owain Glyndwr, converted into a country residence and refortified in the Civil War, withstanding a two-week siege by Parliamentary forces before being finally slighted.
