Riverside Hotel
6/10 Okay
"Stayed here on a Saturday night and on first impressions of the reception and bar/dining/ terraced area, it looked as if the hotel had been given a bit of an uplift, the outside was in keeping with the era with the local buildings and ones dating back to 1900s.
The pool etc and gym were good and enjoyed them.
What wasn’t good was the state of the room, which was in a god awful state of repair, with evidence in insect damaged carpet, lack of painting for a number of years, wood facias all scuffed and chipped, the shower screen having no rubber strip to prevent water dropping onto the floor.
The last part caused water to pour onto the bathroom floor and caused us to get extra towels to shower with as we soaked everything up that had leaked out.
The furniture and fitting in bathroom were very dated too.
I would have asked for a different room but the hotel was fully booked for the night.
The bedding and cleanliness of the room was ok and the only reason we stayed there.
I would say at £135 for one night with no breakfast, was grossly overpriced, by aporox £70, given the appalling state of the room.
I wouldn’t recommend the hotel to anyone, especially at its grossly inflated price and would only consider going back if the whole interior of every room was upgraded.
The interior made a Travelodge room look like a palace.
Bitterly disappointed to say the least!
0 ⭐️ for bedroom and 3⭐️ for everything else!"
"If your travelling with kids and want to use the pool be aware of the opening times!
Check in is 1600, pool time for kids closes at 1700. Check out is 1100 and kids opening time is 1000. Really poor if you are here for the one night and were planning on using it.
Car park is £25 to use however we saw multiple of the local businesses punching in the code and parking their cars. The council car park across from Beatrix Potter was £11 for over night parking.
Breakfast has a limit option on the cooked front and the continental was pretty much empty by 0900, toast in a basket is three bits of toast cut up and it came cold. Premier Inn breakfasts and service majorly trumped this.
Hotel really does need a revamp and brought up to modern times, i guess the "Old" in the name lets you get away with it.
Disappointing stay and value for money only felt on the location point albeit park your car 5 mins walk away."
"Perfect place to stay. The hotel is great, staff very friendly and accommodating, breakfast was brilliant.
The spa is a very nice added bonus. Pool, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi - just what you need after a long hike!
Also has EV charging - £30 flat rate.
I would 100% stay here again."
"We stayed in the suite and honestly it was beautiful, the staff were amazing and the food was beautiful we will be staying again, would highly recommend"
"Because of all the renovations all the corridors are dirty and the outside lawns need a really good mow which haven’t been done in a long time so it looks bad from the outside"
"DO NOT STAY HERE. UNSAFE
I would not recommend this hotel. Our stay was disappointing from start to finish and well below acceptable standards.
On arrival, we were given a cold, dark room that smelled musty, had dirty access steps, a window that would not close, and no electricity. We were initially told a room change was impossible and were only moved after further complaints, wasting much of our evening.
The restaurant was equally poor. Menus had no prices, staff could not provide clear pricing, and we were only told after ordering that drinks were cash only, leaving us with tap water. My burger arrived burnt, and management offered no apology when the issue was raised.
Customer service throughout was dismissive. Concerns were met with indifference, and obtaining complaint details was unnecessarily difficult.
The most serious issue occurred around 3am when the fire alarm sounded. Guests evacuated without guidance, as there was no visible management presence, no instructions, no roll call, and no reassurance during the 30-minute wait outside. The apparent lack of an emergency procedure was alarming and left guests feeling unsafe.
The next morning, several guests said repeated fire alarms and poor management responses were common. Despite multiple opportunities, management offered no meaningful apology or acknowledgement.
Overall, the accommodation, food, customer service, and handling of a serious safety incident fell far below expectations."
